| | Need help finding the right headset?
As confusing as choosing a headset can get, this step by step information guide will give you a basic overview of everything you need to know when shopping for a headset.
Headsets are divided up by the 4 types of devices they are compatible with.
Find which device you will be using your headset with below.
Corded Telephones
For corded telephones, first determine if you're interested in a regular corded headset or a cordless headset.
Corded Headset
If you want a regular corded headset you will need to choose a Headset by Style and an Amplifier. When I refer to a headset, I am referring to the actual headset only and not the Amplifier. Most the time people consider these components together, but let’s keep the terms ‘headsets’ and ‘amplifiers’ separate so we can appreciate their different functions; Keep in mind, however, that for corded telephones an amplifier won’t work without a headset and headset won’t work without an amplifier.
Manufacturer compatibility
When you buy a headset from a manufacturer, the amplifier must be from the same make. So if you buy a GN Netcom headset, you need a GN Netcom amplifier too.
Style
There are 4 basic headset styles available:
For Over the Head style, you would further choose between binaural (two ear pieces) or monaural (one ear piece).
Amplifiers
For Plantronics headsets, the amplifier of choice is the M12 Amplifier. The MX10 Amplifier allows you to use your Plantronics headset not only with a corded telephone but can be swtiched over for used with a seperate audio device, such as a computer, CD player, etc.
The CA10 Wireless Amplifier will work with your headset to allow you the freedom of roaming your office while on the phone. This amplifier converts regular Plantronics headsets into a wireless headset system, saving you from ordering an entire pre-packaged Plantronics Wireless Headset such as the CS10 Wireless Headset System; The CS10 Wireless headset system is just a CA10 amplifier with an H-series headset.
For GN Netcom headsets, you can buy the GN 8000 Amplifier for use with a GN Netcom Headset of any style. Also, theEllipse Wireless Amplifier can be used with any style GN Netcom headset, which allows you to create your own wireless headset system, rather than ordering a prepackaged GN Netcom wireless headset such as the GN 9120.
Wireless Headsets?
For wireless headsets, which work with most corded telephones, go to the Wireless Headset Systems page on our site. Plantronics tries to check the compatibility of most phones on the market but they can’t test them all, but to check the compatibility of your telephone with a wireless Plantronics headset, based on their tests, Link to The Plantronics Compatibility Guide.
PBX Telephones
If you have a PBX phone, such as Nortel or Mitel, with a headset jack, you can buy a Plantronics Polaris Headset, which was designed for PBX phones specifically (Toshiba PBX phones are not compatible). Because your PBX phone has an internal amplifier, you won’t need an amplifier; the headset plugs right into the RJ11 headset jack. Just choose from the following styles:
Use the The Plantronics Compatibility Guide to make sure your particular make and model is compatible with the Polaris Headset of your choice.
Cellular or Cordless Telephones
If you have a cellular or cordless phone with a 2.5mm jack (standard size) most Cellular and Cordless Phone Headsets are compatible. Almost all cordless phones have a standard 2.5mm jack.
If a headset model ends in ‘N2’ or ‘M1’ or any other letter, digit combination, these headsets are designed for specific cellular models. For example, the M123-N2 works with Nokia 3285, 5100, 6100, and 7100 series cellular phones.
If your cellular phone is not 2.5mm compatible, you can get a Cellular Adapter. For example, the WTANK210 headset adapter allows Nokia 2100 series cellular phones to work with headsets which require 2.5mm jacks to work.
Use the The Plantronics Compatibility Guide to make sure your particular make and model is compatible with the Headset of your choice.
Computers
If you have a 3.5mm jack on your computer for headsets, then you must buy an Analog Computer Headset. If you have a an open USB port on your computer, you can choose from Digital Computer Headsets.
Plantronics Computer headsets allow you to chat on the Internet, listen to music, play the latest PC game, or use voice/speech applications on your PC with comfort, ease and clarity.
